Why Magnesium?
Magnesium is the mineral of calm.
It is an essential mineral that plays an important role in biochemical reactions in our bodies, including for the production of melatonin (the hormone that helps us sleep), nervous system function, heart and bone health, and energy.
Magnesium deficiency is becoming more common and is a growing health concern.
While there are not yet studies on the New Zealanders, a study in America showed that more than 50% of the population doesn’t get the recommended daily amount of magnesium. Assuming we have a similar western diet to Americans, we can imagine that the statistics are similar for New Zealanders.
When it comes to getting enough magnesium, there are two factors working against us.
One - Magnesium is becoming a more common deficiency in soils today and the fruit, vegetables and grains we eat today have less magnesium than they used to.
A study conducted on New Zealand soils in 1975 showed that magnesium levels appeared to be generally adequate for most samples. However, the study noted that soil groups indicated “evidence of present or likely future magnesium deficiency.” Fast forward to today, and there is growing evidence that magnesium levels are indeed declining in New Zealand soil and it is becoming more common to use fertiliser to add magnesium to soil.
It is estimated that the mineral content of vegetables has declined by as much as 80 - 90% in the last 100 years.
Other factors including the processing technique of grain bleaching and cooking our vegetables can cause a loss of up to 80% of magnesium content.
Two - Magnesium is used by the body to deal with stress. Studies suggest that stress could increase magnesium loss which in turn enhances the bodies susceptibility to stress, resulting in a magnesium and stress vicious circle.
Without adding a magnesium supplement it is very challenging for many individuals to maintain optimal magnesium levels.
That's why we created Calmist magnesium spray. We found one of the most high-quality sources of magnesium from the Tibetan Plateau and brought this to New Zealand to formulate an effective product that boosts magnesium levels naturally.
